OVERVIEW OF THE YEAR Corporate Responsibility
BBVA increases its community
investment to €85m, 24%
up on 2007
The main contribution the BBVA
Group makes to society involves its
business as a financial institution,
through the products and services it
provides and which have a positive
impact on society at large and, in
particular, on certain more
disadvantaged collectives. In addition
to this, the Group applies a major
policy of community support to
channel specific not-for-profit schemes
designed to make a direct contribution
to meeting basic needs. The main
focus of these schemes is education.
Within this field, special mention
should be made of the €29.6 set
The Niños Adelante scheme has awarded scholarships to 47,104 children in Latin America in 2008
The programme is based on the award
of scholarships, direct financial
assistance, being also supplemented by
school materials and, in certain cases,
food aid.
BBVA has been pursuing this
programme since 2007 in Mexico,
Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru,
Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay, Panama
and Puerto Rico. It is a far-reaching
programme of a “glocal” nature:
• Primary and secondary education is
the common focus in all the Group's
operating countries in the region.
• It addresses specific local needs, with
different groups of beneficiaries and
a varying range of criteria for
awarding the scholarships, catering
for the specific context within each
country.
It is a network initiative, pooling
efforts through the engagement of
schools, public bodies, foundations,
NGOs and organisations in civil society,
which have come forward to partner
BBVA in the creation of value and in
aside for the Community Investment
Plan for Latin America. This plan is
funded with 1% of the profits
generated in the region and is
