IE Law School’s Masters strive to train global lawyers capable
of overcoming the challenges posed by the global economy, and
who will lead the transformation of law, and the society in which
they practice it.
Currently IE Law School offers the Executive LL.M., awarded in conjunction with
Northwestern University School of Law, as well as the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in
International Legal Practice.
Our Master of Laws (LL.M .) and Executive Education programs are already an
international reference in the business practice of law, given their new approach
to the legal issues of globalization, as well as IE’s hands-on methodology. In our
classrooms, students from 31 different countries, solve real problems of increasing
complexity as they learn from the best teachers and practitioners how the law is
applied in different legal systems and how to make complex business decisions. Our
35 years as a part of IE Business School have given us the opportunity to integrate
business administration courses as part of our law programs, giving lawyers the
knowledge and skills necessary to understand and resolve the issues faced by their
corporate clients.
The Executive LL.M. Program
Two of the world’s leading institutions for law and business education, Northwestern
University School of Law in Chicago and IE Law School in Madrid, offer a pioneering
program that combines an education in Anglo-American common law and comparative
aspects of European law. Participants also study business administration subjects
vital to an international lawyer’s career, including financial accounting, corporate
finance, negotiation, marketing and business strategy.
The Executive LL.M. Program is intended for lawyers trained outside the United
States with at least three years of experience in a corporate legal department or law
firm who seek additional knowledge and skills in business and common law.
A unique feature of the Executive LL.M. is that it offers participants the opportunity
to earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Northwestern University School of Law
along with a Certificate in Business Administration awarded by IE Business School.
The Timeframe
The Executive LL.M. is a 9-month program (running from September to May) with
one yearly intake, and offers two timetable options for candidates, allowing for
maximum flexibility.
Intended for participants who would like to earn the LL.M. degree without an extended
period of time away from their personal and professional obligations, the Traditional
Executive Program consists of intensive on-campus periods in Chicago and Madrid,
each approximately two weeks long, alternating with on-line coursework using our
state-of-the-art course platform.
Residential Option in Chicago
If you can take a longer time away from work, and would like more time in a traditional
classroom environment, you may want to consider the Residential Option in Chicago.
This option combines the first semester of the Traditional Executive Program with
the entire Spring Semester (January - May) in residence at Northwestern Law. Under
this option, participants may choose from among a wide variety of courses offered to
residential J.D. and LL.M. students at Northwestern Law.

“The Executive LL.M. Program is providing me with the tools
and skills I believe a lawyer needs in the increasingly complex
and truly international world of legal practice. IE and Northwestern Law are giving
me the chance to dramatically improve my professional training by having access to
superb professors and sharing my experiences with extremely qualified students from
all over the world. Both institutions have been able to create a stimulating learning
environment with an international spirit. I certainly believe I will become a better
lawyer at IE and Northwestern Law.”
