Master in International Relations

Rather than merely teaching arts and humanities, the IE School
of Arts and Humanities seeks to train people to become multilinguists
with global vision; those who will lead the creation of the
new values essential to driving social change in modern society.
The School of Arts and Humanities is at the very heart of IE’s mission, as the arts and
humanities courses it offers form part of all the undergraduate and postgraduate
programs at the University. Thus, all our students, regardless of their chosen field
of study, get the opportunity of acquiring a solid foundation of general knowledge.
And the daily application of this knowledge to the challenges they face in their own
environment will help them to understand that life involves constant change, and will
give them sufficient flexibility to adapt accordingly.

Many people feel an intense international vocation but this is seldom accompanied by
definite career goals. What does it take to be a consultant of international stature, a
respected diplomat, a leading international civil servant, or the innovative manager of
an NGO with global outreach? IE’s Master in International Relations is designed to
help you answer these questions and to transform your calling into a specific career plan.
Moreover, the program will enable you to participate successfully in international
projects that require the cooperation of different players in the public and private
sectors, including non-governmental and civil society organizations.
The different nationalities of the students on the program contribute greatly to any
Master experience.
The international focus of the program is designed to attract a large number of
international applicants, creating a melting pot of students from all over the world,
and representing a unique opportunity for sharing diverse backgrounds, points of
view and cultures. You will benefit greatly from this while your mind is opened to other
cultures and customs as you develop your ability to interact in today's international,
multicultural world.
As the program is intended to be highly participative and interactive, it has been
initially designed for a relatively small number of students (a maximum of 30
students has been established).
The program is structured around 3 periods, which cover twenty-three core courses
divided into four academic areas: Skills, Competencies and Languages; International
Organization, European Institutions and Security Studies; Social Sciences and
Humanities; and Economics and Business.
A visit to the European Union institutions in Brussels is scheduled for the first week
of the final period. Few cities in the world can rival the international atmosphere of
Brussels. It is the seat of the European Union, the headquarters of NATO and the
capital of Belgium. Brussels is home to thousands of diplomats, career civil servants
and other top players in international relations. You will see them at work in carefully
planned visits to the institutions that make up the EU "decision-making triangle": the
Council of Ministers, the European Parliament and the European Commission.
The third trimester also includes an elective period in which you will be able to choose
from a list of subjects that are offered in IE business and law programs. During the
course of the degree, you will also have to submit a Master’s thesis.
Added to this, the program’s academic curriculum will be enriched by a series of
visits and events that will make use of the largely untapped potential of Madrid’s
political, diplomatic, defense, business, and financial communities.
